What is Transactional Analysis?

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a model of personality and communication, founded by Eric Berne (1910–1970).

Ego states

PParentAAdultCChild

Three structural ego states: Parent, Adult, Child. Five functional states — the basis of the egogram and of the Ego-State Lab profile on this site.

The five functional ego states

Controlling Parent — rules, evaluation, correction.

Nurturing Parent — care, support, protection.

Adult — facts, calculation, negotiation.

Free Child — spontaneity, ideas, feelings.

Adapted Child — adaptation to rules and expectations.

Transactions and contract

A transaction is one exchange between ego states. Work starts with a contract: a clear, mutual agreement on a reachable change, stated in plain words. No contract — no work.
